Consists of materials collected during the process of researching and co-writing the story of African American civil rights activist and labor leader, Lee Brown (May 28, 1921-June 27, 2002). Brown, who referred to himself as "Doctor of the Working Class", said that he "Dedicated my life in the service of poor people... I got faith in the masses." At the age of 17 Brown began work on the docks in Galveston, Texas, joining a union and eventually working with political and community organizing groups, the NAACP, the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam for the progress of labor rights and civil rights. Brown primarily rallied for workers rights and civil rights on the waterfront docks of New Orleans in the 1940s, San Francisco hotel and restaurant workers in the 1960s and 1970s, and housing rights for low-income senior citizens in San Francisco in the 1980s and 1990s. He was active with numerous political and community organizing groups including acting as Minister of the Department of Labor for the AD NIP Party (1970) and elected member of the County Central Committee of the Peace and Freedom Party (1986).
