    Biographical / Historical

    Richard William Jones was the foreman on David Hewes' 800-acre ranch near El Modena, California. Ths ranch was one of California's noted orange groves in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Jones was born in Wales in 1854 and died in Orange County in 1944. He married Clara McPherson (1870-1948) in 1895. Clara was the daughter of William Gregg McPherson and Lydia Crane McPherson. David Hewes (1822-1915) started the Hewes ranch (called Anapauma) in 1876 and it operated until 1920, when it was sold for $1,000,000.

    Family papers of Richard William Jones and Clara McPherson Jones, including correspondence to R.W. Jones from David Hewes, other R.W. Jones incoming correspondence, Clara McPherson Jones correspondence, and Lydia Crane McPherson correspondence. Also includes business records relating to R.W. Jones' management of the David Hewes ranch near El Modena, California, family journals and assorted family ephemera.
