Biographical / Historical
LA as Subject was established in 1995 as a four year research project at the Getty Institute. The purpose of this research
project was to compile a printed volume of archives and collections in the Los Angeles area. When the volume was released,
an online database was also created, which has continued to be updated throughout the years, moving from the Getty to the
University of Southern California in 2000. Once called the Archives Forum, the name changed to the LA as subject Advisory
Forum in 1997 and again to the LA as Subject Archives Forum in 2004. The LA as Subject Archives Forum meets every two months
at various LA as Subject membership institutions.
Every year LA as Subject holds the Archives Bazaar, a free and public event that showcases many of the archives and collections
about Los Angeles History. It is convened at the University of Southern California Doheny Library each October.
