Historical note
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles opened for instruction in 1966
in response to the rapid urbanization of Southern California and growing need in the region for architects and urban planners.
The two-year master's program emphasized design-oriented studio work based strongly on the social and technological sciences.
George A. Dudley was appointed the first dean of the school in 1964, almost two years prior to the arrival of the first students.
