Scope and Contents
This collection includes membership cards issued between 1883 and 2005 by railroad unions, historical societies, and clubs.
It was collected by the California State Railroad Museum between 1981 and 2010. Some of the cards were issued by railroad
employee unions for locomotive engineers, firemen, maintenance of way employees, conductors, trainmen, clerks, yardmasters,
postal employees, switchmen and retired employees. There were a few employee cards issued by railroads for employee travel.
Also includes cards issued by railroad clubs devoted to electric railways, narrow gauge, model railroading, and railroad photography.
There is an extensive collection of membership cards for the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society and the California-Nevaada
Railroad Historical Society. One of the miscellaneous cards is a 1903 clergy certificate which provides reduced clergy rates
for railroad travel. Cardholders include railroad enthusiasts Isaac W. Brokaw, Warren K. Miller, Paul Darrell, Francis Guido,
and Frederic J. Shaw.
Between 1981 and 2010, any membership cards donated to the California State Railroad Museum were separated from the rest of
the donation to create this collection. After 2010, it has been our policy to retain membership cards with the rest of the
donation.
