Background
- Scope and content:
-
Much of this collection consists of book production material, which was originally stored in job boxes affixed with an internal archival numbering system. These numbers have been retained, and can be found in parentheses after the title. Also, note that due to the nature of the material (including very large mechanical art for printing) this collection has been rehoused in containers of variety of sizes.
- Biographical / historical:

Yolla Bolly Press was founded in 1974 by Carolyn and James Robertson and continues to operate out of a barn in Covelo, California. Yolly Bolly, two Yuki Indian words, is named for a wilderness area in Mendocino County. For their first ten years, Yolla Bolly produced trade books for major publishers. In 1983, they began printing their own books as a fine press, using a letterpress with both hand and machine-set type.
Yolla Bolly publishes and prints books on a variety of topics, but certain themes prevail: nature, the environment, and travel (they have a long-standing relationship with the Sierra Club); educational, craft and garden, and books for children; and literature in the form of fiction, essays, and poetry. Along with the Sierra Club, Yolla Bolly also prints on behalf of groups such as the Book Club of California and Brown Paper School Books. Works that were produced under these imprints are noted when known.
Included in this collection are administrative files and correspondence (primarily concerning publicity and apprenticeships), but the greater part consists of material produced in the course of book production, particularly mechanical layouts and artwork in a variety of formats and sizes. Among the notable figures contributing to these books: Wallace Stegner, Robinson Jeffers, Christopher Isherwood, M.F.K. Fisher, James Laughlin, Ursula K. LeGuinn, Alice Waters, and Thomas Keller.
