    Biography/Administrative History

The Horizons Foundation was founded in 1980 as the grantmaking arm of the Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA), and has provided grants to support the San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQIA+ community for more than forty years. Horizons took its current name in 1988, and in 1999 achieved the goal of providing a million dollars of yearly grantmaking. It was the first foundation in the United States to make a grant to an AIDS service provider -- a 1982 grant to the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Research and Education Foundation, later known as the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Horizons also sponsored the first Gay Games.
