The Horizons Foundation was founded in 1980 as the grantmaking arm of the Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA), and has provided grants to support the San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQIA+ community for more than forty years. Horizons took its current name in 1988, and in 1999 achieved the goal of providing a million dollars of yearly grantmaking. It was the first foundation in the United States to make a grant to an AIDS service provider -- a 1982 grant to the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Research and Education Foundation, later known as the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
