The University Art Gallery, under the direction of the Division of Arts and Humanities, curates and exhibits innovative and diverse forms of contemporary performance, sound, and installation art.
The UCSD Art Gallery was founded in 1966 to support the Visual Arts Department's mission and academic programming. In 1974, the name was changed to the Mandeville Gallery, when it moved into a space within the Mandeville Center for the Arts. In 1993, when the gallery came under the direction of the Dean of the Arts and Humanities, the gallery's name was changed to the University Art Gallery.
Situated within the research-driven setting of UCSD, the University Art Gallery has presented work that is interdisciplinary, pioneering, and exploratory. Many of the exhibitions have involved UCSD faculty and students, prominent contemporary artists, and new work from local artists. Since its inaugural 1966 exhibition, "Art of Latin America Since Independence," the Gallery has curated many exhibitions dealing with Latin America, U.S. and Mexican border culture, and art developing in Southern California.
Due to the growing student body and the subsequent need for more classroom space, the Gallery was slated to be closed in June of 2016. However, campus-wide concern regarding the importance of the Gallery as a flourishing space for art and innovation prompted the decision to stay a permanent closure, and the University Art Gallery was removed from the immediate list of spaces to be redeveloped.
