Background
Captain Robert M. Tapley (born 1863) was a master mariner that commanded both sail and steam vessels, beginning in the late
19th century. He and his wife both came from families involved in maritime trade. The Tapley family lived on both the East
and West Coasts of the United States. Mrs. Tapley, and later their children, accompanied him on voyages, notably traveling
