Scope and content:

The report describes the physical structure of the Hovden cannery building, the sardine canning process, and the contributions of Knute Hovden. The report includes photocopies of photographs and maps.

Biographical / historical:

Donald Fitzgerald (1929-2001) was born in San Francisco, California. He served in the Navy for 30 years as a pilot and later adjunct professor of political science at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California before earning a PhD in public history at University of California Santa Barbara in 1986. His research focused on California marine history.

The Hovden cannery was purchased by Stanford University in 1967 to act as a buffer for protection of the basin to be used for Hopkins Marine Station. The cannery closed in 1973 and the property was sold to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation in 1978.
