Earle C. Anthony (1880-1961) was a prominent Packard automobile dealer in Los Angeles and
was also the founder and owner of radio station KFI AM 640. He hired architect Bernard
Maybeck to design a mansion for him in 1927 on an 8.5-acre property in the Los Feliz
neighborhood of Los Angeles, and then hired Harold W. Grieve as interior designer. The
estate changed hands in the early 1950s, and in 1971 was bequeathed to the Sisters of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, an order of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and
became a convent.
Harold Walter Grieve (1901-1993) was born in Los Angeles and began his career as a motion
picture art director and set designer. In the late 1920s he turned to interior decoration,
and had a successful career with many clients in the movie business.
A collection of photographs and other materials related to the Earle C. Anthony residence,
built in 1927 in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. The items belonged to Harold W. Grieve,
who was the interior designer for the estate, and include a presentation photograph album of
46 interior and exterior views of the large residence built in the style of a medieval
castle, as well as the grounds and swimming pool. Portraits of Earle C. Anthony and his
wife, Irene, are at the back of the album, following the estate photographs by James N.
Doolittle. Other materials are a sketchbook of 62 drawings by Grieve of architectural
details and scenes in Mexico (1928), during the design phase for the Anthony estate; a
pamphlet for the fashion house of Howard Greer, announcing their new headquarters in
Hollywood with interior design by Grieve (1927); portraits of Earle C. and Irene Anthony
with lengthy inscriptions to Grieve; and a copy of Architectural Digest, Volume 8, No. 1
(1930), featuring the Anthony estate.
Processed by Huntington Library staff, circa late-20th century. In 2020, Suzanne Oatey
created a finding aid derived from a collection file.
