This series contains the correspondence files of Dr. William S. Hekking, who was hired in 1938 as curator of contemporary paintings and sculpture and soon thereafter became Director of the Art Division, serving until 1939. The records document Hekking's efforts to overhaul and revive the art department, including his controversial decision to break ties with several local art clubs, who had been regularly using the Museum's art space to showcase its members' works.
