Papers collected by Carl Thomas Butner during his career with Northwestern Pacific.

Biographical / historical:

Carl Thomas Butner was born in Missouri on August 10, 1899. In 1919, he began working for Northwestern Pacific. During his lengthy career of 43 years, he worked as a watchman, fireman, and locomotive engineer.

Butner had been a resident of Marin County since 1923. He was married to Verna [Purdy] in January 1923 and the father of Cecil, Robert, and Beverly [Butner] Monti. He was the brother of James Clair Butner of Petaluma, California. Butner was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

He continued to work intermittently for Northwestern Pacific until 1963. Butner collapsed and passed away on Jun. 15, 1963, in the cab of his moving engine and is buried in the Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
