Smith O’Brien was born circa 1863. He worked as a draftsman for architect Clinton Day whose practice was based in San Francisco, California. O’Brien later became a partner with architect Frederick Herman Meyer, a partnership which lasted from 1902 to 1908. O’Brien began to practice independently circa 1915 in the San Francisco bay area.
