    Scope and Content of Collection

The "Views of Southern California" collection consists of a photoengraving, periodical illustrations, maps, and mechanical reproductions of artwork depicting Southern California in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of the materials concern Los Angeles and its surrounding area, although there are depictions of Santa Barbara, for example. The majority of the illustrations are separations from other publications, eg, the "Sketch of the Battle of Los Angeles (1847)" comes from William Emory Hemsley's, Notes of a Military Reconnaissance (Washington and New York, 1848). Of special value is the map of 1915 Los Angeles with its depiction of the city's connections to suburbs. It is found in folder 14.
