Rosberg frequently collaborated with his former student Robert H. Jackson on articles and books about politics and rulers in Africa. These files contain chapters, comments on each other's work, drafts, notes, proposals, revisions, and typescripts. Some projects had different working titles. There are materials related to “Personal Rule in Black Africa: Prince, Autocrat, Prophet, Tyrant”; “Why Africa’s Weak States Persist: The Empirical and the Juridical in Statehood”; “Wither the African States”; and “Africa in the World of States: State-Building in the Sub-Saharan Africa Region.” Some folders were just labeled, “African Politics Book.”
The files in Carton 8 were primarily labeled "Personal Rule in Black Africa" and "African Politics Book." They include materials related to Dahomey and Equatorial Guinea and to chapters on One Party/POLIS, authoritarianism and society, decolonization, and the state and ethnicity.

Scope and Content Note

The files in Carton 9 labeled “African Politics Book” include chapters on institutional rule, the failure of constitutional government (the conclusion), modernization and politics, state and society, personal rule, state and rule (the introduction), colonialism, constitutionalism and authoritarianism, and the party polis. Other files/subjects include data for an atlas of the African Continent; the neomercantilist state; Rosberg and Jackson’s travel expenses; Machiavell, the “new prince” and state power; democracy in Black Africa; states of East Africa; and sovereignty and underdevelopment. This carton contains materials related to “Wither the African States,” “Africa in the World of States,” “Why Africa’s Weak States Persist,” “The Old and New Realism”; and “Popular Legitimacy in Multi-Ethnic States” (for the Journal of Modern African Studies). Some materials filed at the end of the series are probably also be collaborations between Rosberg and Jackson.
