The Sacramento Sports Commission Records document the life of the commission, its non-profit funding, its economic relationship with the local government, and the sporting events that it sponsored in the Sacramento area. For over twenty years, the Sacramento Sports Commission was instrumental in bringing approximately twenty-five professional and non-professional sporting events to the Sacramento area. Due to failure to make payments on their loans to the City and County of Sacramento, the Sacramento Sports Commission was dismantled in 2012 and its former responsibilities became a part of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau. This collection is composed of Sacramento Sports Commission founding and business documents, and materials related to their numerous sporting events.

Sacramento Sports Commission (SSC), formed in 1988, was an advisory board that worked in conjunction with the local city and county governments. Sacramento Region Sports Education Foundation (SRSEF), formed in 1998, was the nonprofit aspect of the Sacramento Sports Commission. The overall goal of the Sacramento Sports Commission was to bring prominent sporting events, either professional or amateur, to the Sacramento area. The Sacramento Sports Commission sought to make Sacramento more recognizable through these events, and hoped to generate revenue for the Sacramento Sports Commission and the community. The Commission hosted twenty-five events, including: five NCAA Men's Basketball Tournaments, four NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the 1999 U.S. Gymnastic Championships, two U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field, and four Tour of California events.
