Biographical/Historical note
Stanley Slotkin (1905-1997) was a prominent Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist who had interests in archaeology and
antique books. He was born in New York City, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. By the 1930s, he opened a medical and party
rental business in Saint Louis known as Abbey Rents. The company profited and he eventually moved the company to Los Angeles
in 1937.
As a collector, Slotkin traveled around the world collecting Bibles, musical manuscripts and other rare items. He would often
donate many of his antiquities to numerous universities, museums and churches. In many cases, he would remove leaves from
books and donate the pages to various learning institutions.
