Biography/History
A composer and musicologist whose Los Angeles-based career spanned some 40 years, William Malloch made artistic and intellectual
contributions to radio, arts administration, music education, and journalism, as well as composition and orchestration.
Born on April 22, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan under the name Chester Irving Williams, Jr., he was adopted by Aurelia Malloch
on January 14, 1930, and legally changed his name to William Fuller Malloch. He received a B.A. in music from UC-Berkeley
in 1951, and his M.A. in composition from UCLA in 1958, and at Tanglewood and the Vienna Academy of Music commenced postgraduate
studies.
In 1979, an NEA grant funded Malloch's research and recordings of mechanical musical instruments in Europe from the time of
Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. This was to be among his greatest contribution as it served to uncover authentic tempos of 18th
century music. The results of his studies were reported in his article, "The 'new' (old) minuet," published in the August
1985 issue of, Opus magazine. Subsequent recordings, such as Sir Charles Mackerras' complete cycle of Mozart symphonies released
by Telarc, reflect the influence of his research. Malloch also conducted an ensemble performing Bach's four Orchestral Suites
for a recording released by Koch International.
William Malloch also spent several years as the Music Director at KPFK radio in Los Angeles, Music Director of the Mahler
Society of California, and the Artistic Director for the Ojai Music Festival. On January 9th, 1996, William Malloch died of
cancer at the age of 68.
The collection also includes materials related to Malloch's uncle, poet, writer, and reporter, Douglas Malloch (5/5/1877-7/2/1938).
