Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains papers and videotapes documenting the life of Louis Troy, a self-proclaimed “elder statesman of the
San Francisco Gay community.” Troy claimed to be a charter member of the Mattachine Society. He was also known as Marc Troy
and L. Troy-Preovolos. The manuscript portion of the collection consists of a reminiscence of his accomplishments as “The
Ambassador of American Friendship” and a resume of his international humanitarian campaigns and memberships as head of Troy
World Communications. There are also photocopies of photographs of Troy, including one of him marching in the 1977 Gay Freedom
Day Parade. The collection contains the following videotapes: “Discrimination,” from the series “In My Lifetime-A Minority
of One,” by L. Troy-Preovolos, aka Marc Troy; Gay Interview with Marc Troy, aka Louis Troy-Preovolos, Elder Statesman of the
SF Gay Community, 1998; Louis Troy Oral History, taken by Troy's nephew, in which Troy talks about the gay movement in San
Francisco since the 1940s; Marc Troy, aka L. Troy-Preovolos Talks to Barbara Walters, 1972-1999 (on Cambodia and World Affairs);
