Description
The Howard Walls collection spans the years 1851-1967 (bulk 1947-1953) and encompasses 2.1 linear
feet. The material consists of Walls's working files during his tenure as the Academy's first film
archivist. Much of the information deals with various topics regarding early cinema history, as well as
the Academy's film preservation efforts in that area.
Background
Howard Walls was an American film archivist. He served as curator for the Academy library from around
1947 to 1953. Prior to that he was associated with the Library of Congress.

Property rights to the physical object belong to the Margaret Herrick Library. Researchers are
responsible for obtaining all necessary rights, licenses, or permissions from the appropriate companies
or individuals before quoting from or publishing materials obtained from the library.
