Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains audio recordings, photographs, and personal correspondence related to the life and career of Enrico Caruso, Jr.

Biographical / historical:

Enrico Caruso, Jr. (September 7, 1904-April 9, 1987) was born in Sesto Fiorentino, Florence, Italy to Ada Giachetti and Enrico Caruso. Both of his parents were operatic singers themselves, Giachetti a soprano and Caruso a tenor. Several years after his father's death in 1921, Caruso, Jr. moved to Hollywood, California to pursue his own entertainment career.

Throughout the 1930s and '40, he sang and toured regularly as a tenor, bolstered briefly by his starring roles in two Spanish-language films made by Warner Bros. Studios in California, in 1934 - El Cantante de Napoles and La Buena Ventura. After World War II however, Caruso, Jr. mostly retired from performing and built a career under the name of Henry De Costa, as a department head for the import-export firm of Dunnington and Arnold until 1971.

At the time of his death, he had just completed a book of memoirs, entitled Enrico Caruso: My Father and My Family with librarian and researcher Andrew Farkas.
