Scope and content:

The collection consists of bound volumes and loose single issues of the Sacramento Reporter from April 1870 to July 1972. This time period documents Henry George's editorship of the newspaper and its purchase and closure by the CPRR. There are two duplicate volumes containing issues from June-Dec 1871.

Biographical / historical:

The Sacramento Reporter was a newspaper founded by future California Governor Henry H. Haight in the 1860s. The newspaper was considered an organ of the Democratic Party and was highly critical of railroad subsidies and the railroad industry. It was edited by former California governor John Bigler, and then in 1870, by Henry George. The newspaper was purchased by the Central Pacific Railroad and stopped publishing in 1872.

Acquisition information:
The April-Nov 1870 and Nov 1870-Dec 1871 volumes were donated by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in 2025 (accession 2025/008). Single issues were donated by the Estate of Eleanor McClatchy in 1982 (1982/004). There is no acquisition information for the other bound volumes.
