    Acquisition Information

    The collection was donated in 1996 to the San Jose Historical Museum by Campbell residents James and Cynthia Cost, neighbors of the Wildhofers.

    Biography/Administrative History

    The collection belonged to Jeanette E. Wildhofer (nee Wade) (1911-1996) and her husband Paul H. Wildhofer (d. 1980), who lived on Cambrian Drive in Campbell, California. Jeanette was the daughter of Walter A. Wade and Loretta Irene Edwards, and a descendant of Charles Elliot Wade and Maria Estefana Alviso Wade. She taught at Orchard School in San Jose for 37 years (1934-1971). Wildhofer, born in Gyor, Hungary, came to the U.S. to study at San Jose State University, and later worked for the California State Department of Human Resources.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The Wade-Wildhofer Family Photographs comprise approximately 210 photographic prints ranging from early cartes-de-visite to 1930s snapshots and studio portraits. The collection documents many members of the Wade family, including William C. Scheller and Charlotte "Lottie" Wade of Santa Clara, but also includes early portraits of Paul Wildhofer's Hungarian family.
