Biography/Organization History

Union Iron Works History: In 1849, brothers Peter and James Donahue, a machinist and a boilermaker respectively, started a blacksmith and machine shop in an adobe hut on the northwest corner of Jackson and Montgomery Streets. Their original equipment consisted of only a pair of hand operated bellows and a charcoal forge (A century of progress, 3).

In the spring of 1850, they moved to the northeast corner of First and Mission Streets in the neighborhood then known as Happy Valley, and called their business the Union Iron & Brass Foundry. They were soon joined by their brother Michael Donahue, who was a molder. "The first iron casting produced in California was made at the Union Iron & Brass Foundry in 1850; it was a spring bearing for the shaft of the steamer JOHN S. MCKIM, the first propeller-driven commercial vessel built in the United States (History of Bethlehem's San Francisco Yard, 27).

In 1853, James and Michael sold their interest in the company to Peter. Michael returned to the Midwest where he served three terms as the Mayor of Davenport, Iowa. Peter changed the name of the business to "Union Iron Works, Peter Donahue, Proprietor" and later shortened it to "Union Iron Works" (History of Bethlehem's San Francisco Yard, 27-28).

In 1863, Peter sold a two-thirds interest in Union Iron Works to Henry J. Booth and Charles S. Higgins, and the company was then known as Donahue-Booth and Company. "It was at this time that Irving M. Scott, who had come to the Union Iron Works in 1860 as a draftsman and had risen to the position of responsibility and authority in the firm, was induced to return as superintendent" (History of Bethlehem's San Francisco Yard, 28).

In 1865, Peter Donahue and Charles Higgins sold their interest in the firm and Henry J. Booth, George W. Prescott and Irving M. Scott went into partnership, with Scott becoming the general manager of the works. The new firm was called H.J. Booth and Company (History of Bethlehem's San Francisco Yard, 28).

In June 1875, Henry J. Booth retired and the firm name was changed to Prescott, Scott and Company (History of the San Francisco Yard, 8). In 1880, Irving M. Scott took a trans-Pacific voyage and visited many shipyards around the world, taking note of what other businesses were doing. When he returned to San Francisco, he reorganized the company to make shipbuilding its principal business. The company was incorporated and reverted to its earlier name of Union Iron Works. They purchased 32 acres of land in the Potrero District, and constructed new buildings in 1883. The president of the new corporation was George W. Prescott. Henry T. Scott (Irving's brother) was vice president and treasurer, and Irving M. Scott was general manager. George W. Dickie and his brother James Dickie were brought in to take charge of shipbuilding as superintendent and manager, respectively. The first ship off the ways at the new Union Iron Works was ARAGO, a 200-foot collier, completed in 1885 (History of Bethlehem's San Francisco Yard, 29).

Between the years 1885 and 1902, the Union Iron Works built 75 vessels, including OLYMPIA (built 1892; cruiser: U.S. Navy), OREGON (built 1893; battleship: U.S. Navy), CHARLESTON (built 1888; cruiser: U.S. Navy) and SAN FRANCISCO (built 1889; cruiser: U.S. Navy).

On August 25, 1902, the United Iron Works was sold, together with five other companies, to the United States Shipbuilding Company. The United States Shipbuilding Company went bankrupt and sold Union Iron Works to the Reorganization Committee of the United States in the fall of 1904. On January 19, 1905, the Bethlehem Steel Corporation of New Jersey purchased Union Iron Works (A century of progress, 14; Frear, 238).

On November 11, 1908, the Union Iron Works Dry Dock Company was incorporated and the entire property of the San Francisco Dry Dock Company was purchased at the foot of Second Street and Hunters Point (Fear, 240). In October 1917, the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Ltd. was established in Delaware and leased the Potrero Yard in November of the same year (History of the San Francisco Yard, Argonaut, 11). The company's four Bay Area yards were known as the Potrero Works (for the former Union Iron Works), the Risdon Works, the Hunters Point Works, and the Alameda Works (Minor).

During WWI, the yard built destroyers and submarines. On December 24, 1924, the Union Iron Works Company was purchased by Bethlehem (History of the San Francisco Yard, Argonaut, 11).

On November 15, 1938, the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Ltd. was changed to the Bethlehem Steel Company, Shipbuilding Division, and the Potrero Yard was renamed the San Francisco Yard (Fear, 240). On December 29, 1939, the Hunter's Point property was sold to the Navy Department (Fear, 240).

During WWII, the yard built destroyers, destroyer escorts and cruisers and converted or repaired more than 2500 naval and commercial vessels (San Francisco Yard).

In the early 1970s, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation sold their Alameda Yard. On November 1, 1982, the City of San Francisco became owner of the Potrero location property, and Todd Shipyards, a repair and conversion corporation then headquartered in New York City, assumed title to the assets, the fixtures, and the hardware, of Bethlehem, San Francisco. In 1997, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation ceased all shipbuilding activities. Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation was officially dissolved on January 1, 2004.

Arranged into two Subseries. Subseries 1.1 consists of the photograph album and prints removed from the album. It is arranged into 205 File Units, one for each page of the photograph album. Subseries 1.2 consists of loose photographic material not originally attached to the album pages. It is arranged into five File Units by subject, including parts and machinery built by Union Iron Works, Moore & Scott Iron Works, and other companies; vessels; and loggers.

Scope and Content Note

Items 001-704; 764. One photograph album, 14 x 17 x 2.5 inches, comprised of 695 photographic prints (cyanotypes, black-and-white photographic prints, and photomechanical prints) and 10 newspaper clippings. There are also 17 copy negatives made from prints in the album.

The photographs show various vessels built and repaired by Union Iron Works. Mostly views of U.S. government vessels, with some ferries, lightships, merchant vessels, tugboats, and a yacht pictured. The photographs also show various parts and machinery built by Union Iron Works such as engines, boilers, hoists, pumps, and more. Some photographs show interior and exterior views of the Union Iron Works shipyard.

"Harr Jumper" is written on the upper right corner of the album cover.

A portion of the article has torn off and is housed in a glassine envelope attached to the album page. "The school board" discusses the arrest of Annie J. Dolan, a teacher, for public intoxication. Only the title for "Loss at Pullman" remains adhered to the album page; the rest of the article is missing. "The armament of Europe" concerns fears of war in Europe. Finally, "First rivet in the Japanese cruiser" discusses the construction of CHITOSE (built 1898; cruiser: Imperial Japanese Navy) at Union Iron Works, San Francisco, California.

One halftone print shows a twin-tandem, compound, condensing, direct-connected reversing engine built for the Carnegie Steel Company and Jones & Laughlin Steel Company by Mackintosh, Hemphill & Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One print shows a piece of machinery, possibly an engine, built by Lidgerwood Manufacturing Company.
