Imperial Chemical Industries marketing library, Series I. 1947-1989

Physical Description: 25 Linear Feet(49 boxes)

Arrangement

The materials in this series were originally stored in vertical files with alphanumeric labels on each item which corresponded to a keyword index.
The series is arranged into two subseries: I.A. Trade literature, 1947-1989, and I.B. Product samples and other separated materials, 1966-1983. Materials in Series I.B. were separated as a preservation measure.
Materials are arranged according to their original alphanumeric organizational structure, with a corresponding keyword index titled Keyword In Context (KWIC). This associated alphanumeric key exists physically in Box 49, has been digitized, and can be accessed as a PDF and searched by original keyword terms.
To access the index, use this URL: http://hdl.handle.net/10020/2022M8_KWIC

Scope and Contents

Spanning from 1947 to 1989, this series consists of trade, product, and marketing literature includes correspondence, business to business advertising, brochures and pamphlets, product reports, and accompanying plastics samples from the Marketing Library of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd.

Trade literature, Series I.A. 1947-1989

Arrangement

To search for items in Series I.A., researchers should consult the corresponding "Keyword In Context" (KWIC) that is available online here: http://hdl.handle.net/10020/2022M8_KWIC
The PDF is text-searchable, researchers can choose to look for targeted terms or browse its contents. The KWIC is a 1983 dot-matrix print from the Imperial Chemical Industries ltd. Marketing Library. On the left-hand side of the document are alphabetized keywords, followed by a brief description. On the right-hand side of the document are alphanumeric item labels associated with the materials in Series I.
Researchers should note that the letters "MK" will preceed an item's code in the KWIC, but will not exist on the item or in the file structure.
For example, when searching for "natural rubber" in the KWIC, you will find a result for MKB037, which will be found in the folder titled B035 - B055.
When utilizing the search function of the digitized KWIC, note the British spelling of words throughout the index; "mould" will yield results where "mold" will not.
After identifying the desired documents and their numbers, review this inventory to locate and request the box they are housed in.
Each box in Series I.A. lists a range of items. For example, Box 1 contains all materials for A001 through A099.
For Series I.B., individual items' alphanumeric labels are listed. If researchers wish to view any plastic objects associated with the paper materials from Series I.A., they may refer to Series I.B. to see if any are available for the item numbers they are requesting.

Product samples and other separated materials, Series I.B. 1966-1983

Scope and Contents

When circulating product materials such as marketing literature, business to business advertising, brochures and pamphlets, product reports, and correspondence, it is not uncommon for manufacturers to enclose small product samples.
Some items in this collection included product samples in the form of various plastic objects and plastic materials. As a preservation measure, plastic objects in Series I.A. were separated from their corresponding paper materials, and moved into special housing.
Separated plastic objects from Series I.A. can be found here in Series I.B.

Arrangement

To search for items within this subseries, researchers should consult the corresponding "Keyword In Context" (KWIC) that is available online here: http://hdl.handle.net/10020/2022M8_KWIC
The PDF is text-searchable, researchers can choose to look for targeted terms or browse its contents. The KWIC is a 1983 dot-matrix print from the Imperial Chemical Industries ltd. Marketing Library. On the left-hand side of the document are alphabetized keywords, followed by an item's description. On the right-hand side of the document are item labels associated with the materials in Series I.
After identifying the desired materials and their numbers, review this inventory to locate and request the box they are housed in:
Each box in Series I.B. lists individual items according to box content. As the plastic objects are housed in artifact trays and are of various shapes and sizes, they are arranged prioritizing their physical preservation.
If researchers wish to view separated paper materials associated with items from Series I.B., they may request the corresponding box in Series I.A.
The last box in Series I.B., Box 49, houses the physical KWIC and one other text. These two items required a non-standard box due to their dimensions, and have been included in the arrangement of Series I.B. as a result of their special housing.

Keyword In Context Inventory (KWIC), C369, 1983

Keyword In Context (digitized version): 1983

Imperial Chemical Industries Technical Service and Information Service documents, Series II.  1943-1993

Physical Description: 4.5 Linear Feet(11 boxes)

Arrangement

This series is arranged into the following subseries according to content: II.A. Information service notes, 1947-1965; II.B. Technical service notes, 1943-1993.

Scope and Contents

Imperial Chemical Industries Plastics Division disseminated papers, notes, bulletins, memoranda, and technical and scientific reports both internally and externally from its Information Services and Technical Services laboratories. The laboratories issued many such documents as either Information Service notes or Technical Service notes, sometimes abbreviating these with the heading "I.S. Note" or "T.S. Note." These technical reports and informational materials cover a wide range of topics relevant to ICI's products, manufacturing, processing, and furthering of innovations in the plastics industry.
