Abstract:: Marguerite Schwarzman was an American educator, writer, and librarian in the early 20th century. In the year 1955, the famous architectural critic James Britton II constructed a beautiful house for her in the Mission Hills region. After her death in 1985, the house was to be demolished to construct a Senior community. James Britton’s daughters, Barbara and Ursula Britton, attempted to halt the demolition by having the property designated as a Historic Site. Ultimately, the government decided to demolish in the year 1990. In honor of Marguerite Schwarzman, in 1986 the area agency on aging began awarding the “Marguerite Schwarzman” award to a San Diegan who made a valuable volunteering contribution to the aging community.

Scope and content:: The collection consists of sketches and plans made by James Britton II, photos of what used to be the house of Marguerite Schwarzman, letters and telegrams between Edwin Self, Ursula, Brittany, Anne Brown, Ralph De Sola, Ron Buckley, Barbara Britton and the San Diego Historical Sites Board, and a completed proposal to the Historical Site Board with presentations made by Ursula Britton.
