Background

Scope and content:

Scrapbook of photos, news clippings, mailers of John Bardis' run for District 11 Supervisor in 1979; a photo of Supervisor Bardis in front of City Hall, and his introduction of mayoral candidate Art Agnos at a neighborhood meeting.

Biographical / historical:

John Bardis was active in neighborhood organizing since the 1960s, particularly in the Sunset District. He ran three times for supervisor, losing in at-large elections in 1977 and 1981. He was successful in his 1979 bid for District 11, representing the Sunset District from 1980 to 1981. The San Francisco Chronicle's Marshall Kilduff wrote (on Jan. 8, 1981), following Bardis' final defeat, "Departing Supervisor John Bardis bid farewell to himself last night in a 'swearing-out' party full of his trademark eccentricities and gentlemanly manners that have made him a minor political legend in San Francisco."

Bardis' parents were Greek immigrants. He was a graduate of Harvard Business School. A Republican, he supported district elections and opposed the conversion of apartments to condominums. Prior to serving in office, he was a business consultant.
