Biographical / Historical
The Church of Christ Directories Collection consists of a variety of Church of Christ directories which were created with
a shared purpose in mind-- to connect Church of Christ members with Church of Christ churches and church-sponsored programs,
ministries, schools, and missionaries, wherever they traveled in the United States and internationally. However, each directory
differs in individualized mission, editor/compiler, price, and publisher location.
The Amateur Radio Callbook for Members of the Churches of Christ was prepared by Ray Hawk and Bonnie Petty in Jackson, Tennessee.
The directory contains the callsign and address information of the amateur radio stations for radio communication between
church members. The publication was funded by donations.
There is also a directory of Christian schools operated by Church of Christ members in Houston complied in 1981, as well as
a directory complied by Northeastern Christian Junior College in Villanova, Pennsylvania in 1986 for $5.50 with the hopes
of strengthening ties between congragations in the georgaphical area.
International directories, including specific directories for Ghana, Tijuana, Pacific Islands, and the British Isles allowed
travelling Church of Christ members to find a church service, and also provided interested members with addresses of foreign
churches to donate to. A directory detailing churches in Tijuana incentivizes such donations by not only providing addresses,
but a wealth of history of the gospel in the area, including church needs, benevolent work, and details about ministers' lives.
Sereval Missionary directories serve these same purposes.
The Church in Oregon provides not only information of Church of Christ organization in Oregon, but also an in-depth history
of the Church's proceedings in the state from 1832. It was written by O.J. Russell, a historian and well-known Church of Christ
preacher in Oregon beginning in the 1950s, and published in Tyler, Texas.
The most well-represented directory in the collection, the Western Church Directory, was compluied by Lloyd Ellis in Chula
Vista, California. Through months of correspondence, he was able to compile this near-complete list of Western churches and
preachers, as he saw the American West as a great mission field.
Scope and Contents
