    Abstract: The Fredrick K. Foote Jr. Collection consists of a broad range of materials created and accumulated by Fredrick K. Foote Jr. throughout his attendance at Sacramento City College during the turbulent 1960's. It not only documents Mr. Foote’s time at Sacramento City College, but also the history of the turbulent times during the Vietnam War during the 1960’s. Items date from 1967 to 1990.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Fredrick K. Foote is a Sacramento native, Sacramento City College student and later an instructor. Mr. Foote left Sacramento City College to serve in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, after completing his service he returned to Sacramento City College. During the Vietnam War campus life had become somber and subdued. Mr. Foote had a new appreciation for standing up for what he believes in after serving in the Air Force. Mr. Foote co-found the Black Student Union a group for African-American students on the SCC campus. The work of Mr. Foote and his fellow SCC students led to the creation of the School of African American Thought in Oak Park neighborhood, a satellite campus of SCC for ethnic studies courses.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection contains a number of items related to the civil rights movement at Sacramento City College. The collection also contains correspondence between campus clubs and the Los Rios Community College District. Information on the Black Student Union including club minutes and club publications are in the collection. The collection includes full editions of The Pony Express and clippings, as well as several copies of Third World News a newspaper on minority issues.
