Scope and Content Note

Items 001-084, 136-143. Consists of instructional materials for Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay committee members, a board meeting recording, and episodes of a television series. Includes the "Race Management: An Introduction to Committee Boat Duties and Responsibilities" slideshow for race management team members as well as a protest committee training videocassette consisting of two segments: "Caine v. Delilah: A Pre-Hearing Mediation of a Protest" and "Ankletooth v. Reluctant: A Moot Protest Hearing." Also includes a sound recording labeled "board meetings;" however, the content is unknown since the magnetic tape was warped and the Processing Archivist could not listen to the tape or digitize it. There are also eight episodes of the WGBH produced television series "Under Sail" which provides an introduction to sailing as instructed by host Robbie Doyle.

File Unit 1.  Race management slideshow, 1981

Scope and Content Note

Items 001-082. Presentation titled "Race Management: An Introduction to Committee Boat Duties and Responsibilities." Consists of color slides, an accompanying audiocassette to be played while viewing the slides, and a VHS videocassette version containing both the slideshow images and audio. There are two copies of the videocassette which contain the same content and two copies of the audiocassette which contain the same content. Two copies of each format were retained in the collection for preservation purposes.
The narrator discusses the duties of the Yacht Racing Association race management team. The slides illustrate the team members setting the line, starting the race, and recording the finish. The team members aboard the committee boat include the Principal Race Officer, Signaler, Recorder, Gunner, Spotter, and Timer, as portrayed by Gilbert Oliver, Kitty James, Howard Robinson, Leigh Abell, Martha Abell, and Scott (last name inaudible), respectively. Produced by the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay with the assistance of the San Francisco Bay Sailing Association. Special thanks to Howard Robinson, Jack Feller, and to the San Francisco Yacht Club for use of the committee boat VICTORY (power yacht). Photography by Diane Beeston. Narration by Bob Marshall. Item 083. Videocassette used as part of the yacht racing protest management training seminar for Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay (YRA) protest committee members. Contains two segments: "Caine v. Delilah: A Pre-Hearing Mediation of a Protest" and "Ankletooth v. Reluctant: A Moot Protest Hearing." Produced and written by Jack H. Feller, Jr., Chairman of the Appeals Committee of the YRA. Directed by Jerry Friedman. Video by Emberley Productions. Copyright 1983. Cast of the mediation segment consists of Roger Eldridge as the mediator; Jim Taylor as Phil Queeg; and Al Thews as Deke Borden. Cast of the protest hearing segment consists of Tom Allen as a judge; Joan Burleigh as Molly O'Gara; Roger W. Eldridge as a judge; Jack H. Scope and Content Note

Consists of two segments. In "Caine v. Delilah: A Pre-Hearing Mediation of a Protest," Roger Eldridge, the mediator, explains the mediation process to Phil Queeg of the protesting yacht CAINE and Deke Borden of protested yacht DELILAH. The two parties present their case, and after reviewing the rules, a conclusion is reached when Deke recognizes that he was at fault. In "Ankletooth v. Reluctant: A Moot Protest Hearing," two parties, Molly O'Gara of the protesting yacht ANKLETOOTH and Stu Morton of the protested yacht RELUCTANT, present their case to the three judges: Jack H. Feller, Jr., Tom Allen, and Roger Eldridge. Witnesses Dick Harman, Harry Thomas, Jan Margo, and Don Rogers are called. No verdict is presented. During the introduction to the case, Jack H Feller, Jr. informs viewers that they will practice writing their own verdict at the conclusion of the video. Running time is 42 minutes.

Scope and Content Note

Items 136-143. Consists of 8 episodes of the television series "Under Sail" produced by the Boston public television station WGBH in association with Sail Magazine and Timberland Company. Episodes 101-108. The program offers an introduction to sailing with instructions on how to set sail, rules of the road, and safety. Hosted by Robbie Doyle, a member of the 1977 America's Cup winning crew and U.S. Olympic sailing team member, and produced by Julie Piens. Reoccurring guests include Brion Toss as Mr. Knot; Warwick Tompkins as The Commodore; Tom O'Brien as Harry the Loser; and sailboard expert Kay Robberson.
Content descriptions at the Item level were retrieved from OCLC's WorldCat catalog records.
No information concerning the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay's relationship to the television series could be located. A review of File Units containing general records and correspondence from 1983 and 1984 in HDC 644 and HDC 1650 found no reference to these episodes of "Under Sail."

Scope and Content Note

Item 129. Footage of the 88th Annual Vallejo Yacht Club (VYC) Race on San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, California. Contains race footage as well as interviews with organizers, sponsors, and spectators. The title and end credits of the video are difficult to read. The video was produced by Vallejo Yacht Club, with Pat Lane as executive producer and John Johnstone as director. The camera crew included John Johnstone, Mary Boston, Lynne Chandler, and Jere Barlow. The camera boat was operated by ?Starvin Marvin? Enea. Special thanks to Norman C. Owens, Jr. (VYC Commodore), Pat Lane (VYC Vice Commodore), and Vern Coburn (VYC Rear Commodore). The event was sponsored by Carlsberg Beer, KRON TV Channel 4, and Pier 39. The event was originally planned for the first weekend of May but the race was postponed until July.

Contains footage of yachts underway set to a music soundtrack as well as interviews of various people conducted by Mary Boston and Pat Lane. Mary Boston interviews "Starvin Marvin" Enea, camera boat operator; John McKay, sales manager for KRON; Shirley Shotwell and George Jacobs, winners of a drawing to watch the race aboard GOLDEN SUNSET; Suzanne Saunders, KRON reporter; Dick Unsen, marketing director of Carlsberg Beer; John Bosch, director of market development at Pier 39; and Tiny Robbins of the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay and Vallejo Yacht Club (VYC). Pat Lane interviews Bill Shaw, owner of Eiger Communications; Norm Owens, commodore of the VYC; Don Kay, start chairman; Tiny Robbins; and Dave Lastufka, race chairman. Both Kay and Robbins discuss race management duties. Also includes footage of people dancing, possibly inside the Vallejo Yacht Club. Express, Santana, J-24, and several other yacht classes participate in the race. Running time is 1 hour and 29 minutes.
