The collection consists of the papers of William
Frederic Badè and including primarily Badè correspondence and contracts
concerning books by or about John Muir, writings about John Muir, transcribed
correspondence of John Muir
Background
William Fredric Badè (1871-1936) was Muir's literary executor and first
biographer. He edited and published Muir's posthumous books: A Thousand Mile
Walk to the Gulf, Cruise of the Corwin, Steep Trails, and Travels in Alaska. He
wrote and published The Life and Letters of John Muir in 1924. In the creation
of Life and Letters, Badè gathered thousands of letters from Muir, as well as
botanical specimens, reminiscences with those that knew Muir, and notes. Badè
also served as president of the Sierra Club from 1918-1922 and edited the
Sierra Club Bulletin for years.
