Abstract:
Joye Harold Severaid specialized in mammology and the natural history of the Sacramento area. An active conservationist, Dr. Severaid served on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Zoological Society and co-edited the societyโ€™s bulletin. He also served as President and Chair of the Save the American River Association and was the CSUS representative to the 58th National Audubon Society Convention in 1962. The collection consists of reports, correspondence, diaries, maps, photographs and artifacts.

Joye Harold Severaid was born in July 1915 in Boone, Iowa. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Zoology from Iowa State College in 1938, a Masters of Science degree in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Maine in 1941 and a Masters of Art degree in Vertebrate Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1949. He obtained a Doctoral Degree in Vertebrate Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955.

He became a faculty member of the Life Sciences Department at California State University (then known as Sacramento State College) in 1951. Dr. Severaid specialized in mammology and the natural history of the Sacramento area. In 1952 he and a colleague led students in the archaeological removal of the "Live Oak Mastodon." An active conservationist, Dr. Severaid served on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Zoological Society and co-edited its bulletin. He also served as President and Chair of the Save the American River Association (SARA) and was the CSUS representative to the 58th National Audubon Society Convention in 1962. In 1965, Dr. Severaid received an invitation from President Lyndon Johnson to attend the White House Conference on National Beauty. He wrote several articles and books for publication including The Snowshoe Hare: Its Life History and Artificial Propagation (1942), and Mammals of the Sacramento Area (1962). Joye Harold Severaid died and was buried in 1987 in Huxley, Iowa.

Acquisition information:
The Joye Harold Severaid papers were donated to the Department of Special Collections University Archives in 1992. Additions were donated in 1998.
