    Abstract: The Joseph Dougherty Collection consists primarily of produced scripts, drafts, outlines, synopses, notes and research by Dougherty for the episodic television series, Pretty Little Liars as well as the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, Ravenswood. The collection also includes other television scripts written by Mr. Dougherty between 2000 and 2016.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Joseph Dougherty began his career on the television series, thirtysomething, writing fifteen episodes and directing five episodes. In 1989, Dougherty won an Emmy for the thirtysomething episode First Day/Last Day. In 1989, he won a Humanitas Prize for the thirtysomething episode, Elliot’s Day. Dougherty wrote, directed and executive produced the popular teen drama, Pretty Little Liars, which aired from 2010-2017. He also co-created the Pretty Little Liars spinoff series, Ravenswood, and served as an executive producer on Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. He has also written and/or directed episodes of Judging Amy, Saving Grace, Once and Again, Saved, and Presidio Med as well as the HBO movies, Attack of the 50 ft. Woman and Cast a Deadly Spell.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The Joseph Dougherty Collection consists primarily of produced scripts, drafts, outlines, synopses, notes and research written and compiled by Dougherty for the episodic television series, “Pretty Little Liars” as well as the “Pretty Little Liars” spinoff, “Ravenswood”. The collection also includes other television scripts written by Mr. Dougherty between 2000 and 2016. The collection is arranged into two series with items dating from 2000-2016. Series I: Television Scripts is divided into the following: Subseries A: Pretty Little Liars spanning 2010-2016, Subseries B: Ravenswood, 2013, Subseries C: Saved 2006, Subseries D: Misc. Scripts from 2000-2011. Series II: Publicity items and Books spans 2006-2014. Subseries A: “Pretty Little Liars” forms the bulk of the collection. It encompasses all stages of the writing process for 42 episodes written or co-written by Joseph Dougherty between 2010 and 2016. This subseries includes extensive outlines, synopses, notes and research for each episode. Subseries B: “Ravenswood” includes outlines, and drafts for the pilot and second episode, co-written by series creators, I. Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick and Joseph Dougherty. Many of the scripts in Subseries C: “Saved” include handwritten annotations by Joseph Dougherty, treatments, and assorted draft stages. Also included are scripts written by David Manson, Ann Hamilton, Speed Weed, John Mankiewicz, Barry Pullman and Kira Arné. Subseries D: Misc Scripts includes scripts for “Saving Grace”, “Judging Amy”, “Presidio Med”, and “Clubhouse”. Series II: Publicity items and Books contains copies of the original “Pretty Little Liars” novels written by Sara Shephard, and magazine articles featuring the “Pretty Little Liars” series. Highlights include mock theater lobby displays for the Rosewood movie theater in “Pretty Little Liars “, “Ravenswood” bumper stickers, noir photographs, and cuttings from J. Dougherty’s idea boards.
