Biography/Administrative History
Samuel Franklin Leib (1848-1924) was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, to Joseph and Clarissa Leib. He had two brothers. He
was educated in law in Michigan and came West to join the law practice of the celebrated attorney Delphine Delmas. He died
of pneumonia in San Jose, December 26, 1924, at the age of 76.
Scope and Content of Collection
Samuel Leib family financial records, the bulk of which are receipts and invoices from local businesses in San Jose for household
and business expenses between 1881 and 1908. The receipts have been sorted chronologically, then alphabetically, by business.
In addition, the records include two ledgers: Law Offices of S. F. Leib "Abstract Account" (1893-1898) and an unidentified
accounting ledger (1872-1880); and a small assortment of stock certificates. As a whole, the papers provide a snapshot of
the local San Jose business community, as well as insight into one family's expenses in the late 19th century. A set of Leib
family correspondence was also included in the papers purchased by the donor, but these were acquired by Stanford University.
