Biographical / historical:

American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a network of women throughout the world in order to foster understanding and good will among nations through personal exchange and collaboration. They achieve this through educational programs, delegations, and advocacy initiatives. Members seek to acquire knowledge through study, travel, and symposia designed to develop international understanding and to foster personal and organizational relationships among women throughout the world.

AWIU was founded by Bernice Behrens (1910-1995) in 1968. She led delegations of American professional, business and government women executives to meet key women in more than 100 countries around the world. Today, AWIU delegations have travelled to every continent except Antarctica.
