Abstract: The Jake Zeitlin and Ver Brugge archive consists of working catalogue sheets from the firm as representing all the catalogued
books and manuscripts handled by the firm throughout its years in the old Red Barn.
Content Description
[From dealer's description] This is the unique record of the pioneering American bookseller, Jake Zeitlin, who became known
for the history of science and history of medicine. The archive covers "everything", but science and medicine is the great
strength. But the special aspect of the archive is that the records retain a great deal of source information regarding each
book. Recorded in manuscript over roughly thirty years, the sheets often will show the work of cataloguing each item, and
may include where the item came from, who it was offered to, and where it was sold. This is all the records retailed by the
Book Cataloguing Department. Various cataloguers contributed to the archive: Lottie Monash, Anne Bobrow, Ivy Trent, Karen
Lence, Paul Naiditch, J. Weber, and throughout Jake Zeitlin himself would add his mark to each piece he checked and read.
The archive is extended further with the saved records of Jeff Weber Rare Books, being a former employee of Zeitlin, Jeff
Weber have curated this archive and added to it. Zeitlin & Ver Brugge were known for the quality of their scholarship, the
character and rarity of the books they offered, and Mr. Zeitlin could certainly be characterized as a scholar bookseller,
seeking to add to the culture of Los Angeles and those who engaged his services.
