The William Lee Woollett papers span 10 linear feet and date from circa 1920 to circa 1980. The collection contains undated artwork in the form of lithographs, charcoal, and watercolor drawings; drafts of Woollett’s writings “The Bi-Focal Mind” (unpublished), “The Historic Interval” (unpublished) and California’s Golden Age; newspaper clippings regarding Woollett’s architectural projects; a collection of architectural writings on the Grauman’s Metropolitan Theatre; presentation boards for the Los Angeles Civic Center Redevelopment and Grauman’s Theatre; letters; photographic prints and negatives; architectural drawings and reprographic copies of the Grauman’s Theatre and Lakeside Golf Club projects.

William Lee Woollett (son of architect William Lee Woollett, 1987-1955) was born in Albany, New York on February 20, 1901. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1925. Woollett went on to study design at the Beaux Arts Institute in New York for one year. From 1926 to1929, he worked with his father as a project architect and partner in Woollett and Woollett in Los Angeles, California. In 1975, Woollett relocated to Santa Barbara. Over the course of his career, he published two books: one book which documented the construction of the Hoover Dam through lithography and the second book entitled California’s Golden Age documented California history through architecture. William Lee Woollett died at the age of 87, in 1988.
