The collection consists of business records of the Wells Fargo & Company Express.

The Wells Fargo Company was launched as a joint stock enterprise on March 18, 1852 by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo. Wells Fargo was created to serve as an express and banking business and served Gold Rush California.
