Biography / Administrative History
The Hart Institute for American History was established at Pomona College in 2000 as a
part of The Campaign for Pomona College with a gift from Gurnee F. ('51) and Marjorie
Hart. The Hart Institute was established to emphasize primary sources as a basis for
discussion of broad themes and problems in American history and to provide students with a
deeper understanding and appreciation of history. From 2001 to 2011, the Hart Institute
sponsored a lecture series based on topics ranging from American Film to War and Society
and invited prominent researchers and historians to visit the Pomona College campus to
speak about their work. In addition to the annual lecture series, the Hart Institute
organized student-faculty workshops led by visiting lecturers, upper-division student and
faculty seminars, grants for undergraduate summer research in American history, a
publication program, summer workshops for high school and community college teachers, and
projects for local high school students. An alumnus of Pomona College, Gurnee F. Hart is a
retired partner and managing director at the investment firm Scudder, Stevens & Clark.
Mr. Hart majored in economics at Pomona and received a master's in business administration
from the Stanford Business School. After retirement, he spent two terms reading history at
Jesus College at the University of Cambridge.
