    Abstract: Klein organized the "Moon Over Miami" event in 1977 to benefit the Miami Gay Support Committee's fight against Anita Bryant's anti-homosexual campaign. The success of the benefit led to a few other fundraising events for the anti-Briggs Initiative (a.k.a. No On 6) campaign. Klein also collected additional materials related to gay rights events from 1977-1979.

    Access

    The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

    Publication Rights

    All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.

    Biographical Note

    Allen Klein was born in New York, and attended Hunter College and Yale Drama School. He worked as an art director and scenic designer for CBS-TV in New York. He moved to the Haight District in San Francisco and established a silk screen business called The Works. He was a member of a gay fathers group in the 1970s.

    Scope and Contents

    Moon Over Miami was a benefit event for the Miami Gay Support Committee which opposed Anita Bryant's "Save Our Children" campaign against homosexuals. The Moon Over Miami event included several entertainers with Armisted Maupin as the master of ceremonies. Maupin refers to the event in his Tales of the City installment which is clipped in the file. Klein was successful in this venture and was involved with additional fundraisers. There are programs for a Hollywood Bowl event "A Star Spangled Night For Rights," "A Little Rights Music," the Concerned Voters of California No on 6 dinner program, and the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade and Celebration.
