Scope and content:

This collection consists of papers documenting the career of Hannah-Beth Jackson in both branches of the California State Legislature from 1998-2020. The bulk of the collection is composed of legislative files covering her service in the California State Senate (2013-2020). In addition to these files, materials include letters (arranged chronologically from 2013-2020), California State Senate Committee on Judicary Legislative Bill Summaries (2013-2020), a California State Senate Legislation and Awards Packet (2013-2020), and a Legislative Package (1999-2017). A smaller number of files covers Jackson's service in the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2004. These files include printed talking points, collected public outreach materials (1999-2004), photographs, issue files, legislative summaries, and accomplishments.

Biographical / historical:

Democratic politician Hannah-Beth Jackson served in the California State Senate from 2012-2020, representing the 19th Senate District (Santa Barbara County, Ventura County). From 1998 to 2004, she served in the California State Assembly, representing the 35th Assembly District (Kern County). Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1950, Jackson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Sociology from Scripps College (Claremont, California) in 1971 and her Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law.

Working in support of education, labor, veterans, the enivronment, and gender equality, Jackson introduced many bills while serving in the California State Senate, including the California Fair Pay Act (2015), ensuring that employees are not paid more for the same work because of their gender, and SB 826 (2018), requiring gender diversity on California's corporate boards. Both were signed into law.

Jackson received "Legislator of the Year" awards from the Consumer Federation of California, the National Organization of Women, the Junior League of California, the California League of Conservation Voters, and Californians Against Waste.
