Biographical / Historical
Rolling Hills Estates was founded on September 10th, 1957 with 1.4 square miles of land and a population of 3,600. It was
the 60th city formed in Los Angeles County and the 3rd on the Peninsula. The city formed out of a need to maintain local rule
during annexation attempts by the cities of Torrance and Lomita.
Jack Hopkins, chairman of the Peninsula Citizens' Committee, led the drive to get unincorporated areas on the Peninsula into
the new city proposal. He became the city's first mayor.
