Abstract: The Ventura County Star was founded in 1925 by the John P. Scripps Newspaper Group. In approximately 1936, the Star acquired
the Ventura Free Press, which was founded in 1875, and began publishing as the Ventura County Star-Free Press in 1938. In
1994, the newspaper dropped the Free Press and began publishing again as the Ventura County Star. Their headquarters are in
Camarillo, California. The Ventura County Star-Free Press negatives collection consists of negatives from the paper's photograph
archive. The negatives encompass the full spectrum of local daily news and topics reported on by the paper.

PORTIONS OF COLLECTION STORED OFF-SITE: Open for research. Negatives dated after May 19, 1984 and Boxes 183-190 are stored
off-sit and requests to access those materials must be made in advance by contacting the Research Library staff.

Biographical / Historical
The Ventura County Star was founded in 1925 by the John P. Scripps Newspaper Group. In approximately 1936, the Star acquired
the Ventura Free Press, which was founded in 1875, and began publishing as the Ventura County Star-Free Press in 1938. In
1994, the newspaper dropped the Free Press and began publishing again as the Ventura County Star. Their headquarters are in
Camarillo, California.
In 2015 the Journal Media Group acquired the Ventura County Star from the Scripps Newspaper. In April 2016 Group Gannet Co,
Inc. acquired the newspaper and is the current owner of the Ventura County Star.
Scope and Contents
The Ventura County Star-Free Press negatives collection consists of negatives of news photographs collected by the Ventura
County Star-Free Press. The negatives encompass the full spectrum of local daily news and topics reported on by the paper,
including local government, politics, military conflicts, society, sports, fashion, the arts, crime, accidents, transportation,
urban and suburban development, and human interest stories.
Organization and Arrangement
This collection has been arranged chronologically. Original order of materials has been maintained. The first three portions
of the collection were arranged and described at the item level. The final series has been described at the box level only.
