Arobateau lived most of his life in San Francisco. He was a prolific author of books, plays, and poetry, and his writings explored a wide range of topics, including philosophy, sexuality, feminism, sex work, and gender identity.

Scope and content:

The majority of the Red Jordan Arobateau collection contains material related to his writings, books, articles, poetry, and public performances in San Francisco (bulk 1993-1998).

Biographical / historical:

Red Jordan Arobateau was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 15, 1943. Arobateau is of Honduran and African American ancestry. By the late 1960s, Arobateau moved to San Francisco where he would live most of his life.

Red Arobateau was a prolific writer who produced a large body of work that included books, anthologies, plays, poetry, short stories and numerous articles. Much of Arobateau's early writings were self-published. Over the years, he gained recognition in lesbian and feminist literature in particular, and some of his works would be published in small press publications and anthologies.

Arobateau was also painter and visual artist.

Arobateau died on November 25, 2021.
