Biographical / Historical

The British helmet is one of many purchased by the US Government for the first troops of the American Expeditionary Force. The saber is stamped with "Army and Navy Cooperative Co. New York NY", which was a large uniform house that was formed in 1912 and seems to have gone out of business in 1919 or 1925.
Captain Butler Ives, Jr., American Expeditionary Forces (1/6/1884 - 4/11/1947) was born in Detroit, Michigan. Both of his parents died in 1916 before he entered the war, where he served with the Supply Company of the 338th Infantry, eventually promoting to the rank of Captain. Capt. Ives left Hoboken, New Jersey on July 22, 1918 and returned, departing from Brest, France on April 2, 1919, listing his sister Alice Walker as an emergency contact on both passenger manifests. He later married Elizabeth Maud Gmeiner in 1921. He passed away in Detroit in 1947 at the age of 63. (Ancestry.com and related materials)
