Background
Allan Nevins, American historian, author of numerous books on American history including Ordeal of the Union (New York : Scribner,
1947-1971). From 1931 to 1958, he occupied the DeWitt Clinton Chair in American History at Columbia University. Having retired
from Columbia, he accepted the position of Senior Research Associate at the Huntington Library. He retired in 1970 and died
in 1971.
