Background
On July 1, 1966, University of California, San Diego Regents assumed operation of San Diego County General Hospital as the
teaching hospital for the new School of Medicine at UCSD. The name changed to University Hospital of San Diego County in
1968. The main hospital building is located 12 miles from the UCSD campus in Hillcrest. Originally, the UCSD Medical Center,
in additional to the University Hospital, incorporated the School of Medicine in La Jolla, County Mental Health complex, the
Burn and Regional Trauma Center, and the Outpatient Center by 1981. In 1993, the John M. and Sally B. Thornton Hospital and
Perlman Ambulatory Care Center opened in
La Jolla.
