The Erich von Stroheim papers span the years 1933-1983 (bulk 1960s-1970s) and encompass 14.8 linear
foot. The collection contains scripts; clippings; correspondence regarding various projects about the
life of von Stroheim; miscellany, including advertisements for books about von Stroheim; clippings
regarding his son, sound editor Josef von Stroheim; and photostats of handwritten memoirs by his wife,
Valerie von Stroheim.
Background
Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian-born director, actor, and screenwriter who emigrated to the United
States in 1909. He received a nomination from the Academy for actor in a supporting role for SUNSET BLVD.
